Army school
Wavell Community Junior School.
Located on Catterick Garrison army base in North Yorkshire, Wavell is a junior school that shares its grounds with Wavell infant and nursery school. The school pupils are from service families, which mean that there is a lot of coming and going, and a high turnover of children as their families move to different bases. The school acknowledges this with a successful "buddy" system to welcome new children to the school and community.
The school encourages a creative, flexible and enriched curriculum which meets the interests, needs and preferences of every child. At Wavell, the whole school (about 210 children) gets involved in a wide variety of activities, clubs and events. The school also understands how drama can help develop confidence and create a new level of interest in a topic. Drama is encouraged as a way to present ideas and information, which is demonstrated during morning assemblies with role play and drama presentations and various drama lessons and events, performed to other children and parents on Q-build staging from Stage Systems.
Stored in the hall, the Q-build stage is regularly built and used in a variety of formats and for various activities. As well as the children's' performances, the stage is used in assemblies, for visiting speakers and many musical performances and events, an area where Wavell excels. During July the school is holding an "Arts Week" where the stage will be used for numerous activities across the school and will feature an exciting concert, staring the children and watched by the rest of the schoolchildren, teachers and proud parents.
